The crash of waves is heard mingled with the weeps of a baby girl in a wicker basket. The thunder booms, and the little babe's weeps grow louder. A fishing boat docks, and a middle aged fisherman walks onto the dock. He hears the baby's cries and looks about him. He sees the basket and picks it up saying, "Hush me dear, don't cry. There's someone her to take care of ye now."

He covered her with his coat and brought her in his cabin, to where it was dry. As the Crew crowded around. The fisherman dicovered a note tied to the baby's wrist. It read:"

The man lifts his brows and sighs. "Poor darlin'." He says shaking his head a bit and rocks it in his arms. He turns to the others. "Well, maties, what do ye suggest we do with this baby girl." A voice spoke up angrily. "I say we leave 'er where ye found 'er, we have no need for a baby." The man was large and burly with a black beard and thick brows. "Ah we can' leave her." The man rocking the baby contested a bit angered at what the man suggested. He looks around. "What about the rest of ye?" he asks.

There was a mingling of "Ayes" and "No,'s",about evenly divided.A young man stepped forward, taking the baby from the older man and holding it close to him."C'mon,"he said."It's jus' one little girl,'oh hard could it be for a whole crew to take care of her?"

The young man looked around a the faces of thosegathered. Certainly it seemed that most of them were thinking of the "bad luck to have a woman aboard." myth. Suddenly worried for the childs safety moved into his mind.
Many of the older more myth fearing sailors might even toss her overboard. The young man, whose name was Thomas, looked around a bit then quickly concocted a plan:
"Well..can't let the little thing strave..." He said, wrapping her up and making for the deck. "I'll go find her something to eat.....then we can decide what to do for her later."
Running ashore he took a route he knew well. Deep in thought he all but ran over a man in front of him. The landing was a bit funny, both men ending up on there backs.
"Curse ye for breathin'..." Came the man's growl to Thomas's ears. Thomas looked up a bit surprised to see his old friend siting up next to him.
"Why....Sparrow..."

Captain Jack Sparrow Lifted himself up off the ground and dusted himself off. He turned in surprise when he heard his name. "Thomas?" He said quizically helping the man to his feet. "here now, what's your hurry, and what is it you have there?" He said pointing to the cloth swaddled bundle in Thomas' arms.
"Well mate, you see, an old fisherman who's part of the crew I'm with wen't and found this poor little bab out there in the cold someplace, and being the kind hearted man that he is, brought her back, asking the rest of the crew what to do with her. Now seeing as how most of the men seemed to be against keeping her, and fearing she might meet an untimely as well as watery end I decided to go find someone to take care of her." Suddenly Thomas held the child out to Jack. "Ye wouldn't might be wantin' to take her would ye Jack?" He said hopefully.

Sparrow raised his eyebrows."Thomas,mate...do I seem to you like a paternal sort of person?"He gestured to the assortment of rags and weapons which his attire consisted mainly of."I never 'eard tbhat pirates made good nannys...matter of fact, people seem to habitually keep their kiddies inside when I come around."He grinned apologetically.
Thomas said nothing, but continued to look at Jack expectantly.
Jack's eyes flickered guiltily.

Jack crossed his arms over his chest, giving Thomas a stare that said "Don't make me feel guilty..." Thomas's eyes became pleading and Jack finally threw up his hands in annoyance.
"Fine! Bring it to the Pearl...." He grumbled. "But don't be expecting me to raise her. I'm not a nurse you know.." He growled out and stalked away, leaving Thomas to trail behind.

"Oh no, no of course not mate, wouldn't dream of it. JUst needed to get her someplace safe is all... "Sides, I figure ye know enough women that ye can be leaving with as she's taken care of properly." Thomas babbled his appreciation as he follwed after Sparrow down the streets.

Jack's dark eyes flickered at Thomas's mention of him knowing a number of women. He arched a eyebrow and sort of gave a half snicker, and continued his walk down the street, towards the docks.
"Does it have a name?" Jack asked vaguly, faking indifference towards the whole matter.
(OCC- my friends...when does this take place...now that we've got Jack involved...sorry bout that....is this before or after the movie time period?)

(OOC-I would like to think this happened after the occurences in the movie that way we can put in ourselves if we wish and add people from the site!) "No," Thomas answers. "Not yet anyway, the little girl has not even a name yet." he told him. "Any suggestions?" he asks as the sounds of the waves calme the babes' ears. "I'm not very good with names...but what about..." Jack pondered thinking of the many women he knew and tried to think of one that struck his fancy.

"Jessica,"replied Thomas."Tha's what the note said."
"So...it's a girl?"asked Jack.Thomas nodded. The old superstition came unbidden to Jack's mind.He shook his head.Well, that won't be an isue. This thing won't be sailin' with me.We'll find it---her a nice home, and then it's bye-bye baby...He carried the child back onto his ship. She'll be nothing but a memory to me by the time we leave this harbor.

The name Jessica struck Jack as a name of a lass he'd know in Tortuga. Lass with soft hair and a hard hand. He wasn't exactly fond of the name.
"Jessy it is then..." He said almost under his breath. He'd rather know this child as Jessy. He led Thomas to his ship. "I'm not sure what these things eat.....look in my cabin. There's bound to be something in there...."
