Oh I use a french word in this, and the translation will be at the bottom of the post that it's in. I'm gonna do this in chunks so that I dont freak out the computer... The story is 11 bloody pages long in Word!
*Disclamier - I do use foul launguage in this, as well as some disturbing descriptions. (not as bad as it could be but...) So any guests or members who read this... don't say I didn't warn you.
Saber sat in the dark of her grief and of the night. Her world was in pieces, and she didn’t know if they would ever be able to be put back together. The stars however went on in their courses above. She knew. She could see them through the hole in the roof. A cry startled her, and groaning, Saber left her spot sitting against the wall and crawled over to the small pile of rags in the corner. Picking up the small bundle that lay there she rocked it in her arms.
“Hey… hey Cate, shhh, we need to be quiet.” The infant quieted down at the sound of her mother’s voice, and simply whimpered a little as she looked into the tired draw face that looked down on her. After nursing the child Saber set her down again and resumed her seat by the wall. Suddenly she was attacked by another coughing spell. Doubling over from pain she tried to keep quiet so as not to wake her child, the poor fatherless girl who would grow up into who knows what, if she even survived at all. Slowly Saber again crawled over to the rags and lay down next to Cate. Stroking the soft baby cheek with her forefinger, Saber managed a smile. If nothing else, she was proud to have brought new life into the world. Although as she contemplated their future, she wasn’t so sure that bring a child into that harsh world was a good thing.
Several months ago, Saber couldn’t remember how long, she had been living the high life of a pirate. Sailing on the dangerous and fabled Black Pearl under the Mutinous Captain Morgan Barbossa. Only Barbossa had known her secret, after all it wouldn’t do to tell too many men that she was a girl. Unfortunately, Saber was young, and a girl’s head can be turned by compliments, glances and words in the dark. And now she lay sick in Tortuga, with a child that never should have been. Barbossa hadn’t thrown her off the Pearl when he found out that Saber was bearing his child. In fact Saber doubted that he even knew at all. After Saber had found out, she realized her dilemma, and tired to hide it as long as she could. When it became impossible she slipped ship one night in Tortuga… and was never heard of again. She had found a dirty, half torn down house to stay in, and earned her bread by serving as a barmaid in a tavern. Wearing a dress and keeping her face down, she hoped she would never be recognized by anyone. The fates looked kindly on the seventeen year old girl and allowed her to stay out of notice and out of mind. When the time came for her child to be born, Saber managed to find a woman to help her, and Cate was successfully brought into the cold and dangerous world of Tortuga. Saber grew terribly sick, and found she couldn’t work anymore. With no food or money she holed herself up in her “house” and took care of her daughter. Sometimes at night she would sneak out, and steal or beg whatever food she could, but she could never be gone long or Cate would awake and cry. Saber never sold her self again, even though she knew it would be an easy way of making money; she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Cate was born out of a dangerous infatuation, but it had been something like love nonetheless.
Cate was now six weeks old, and Saber felt herself giving way. She knew if she didn’t get help soon, she would die. And then what would become of her daughter? Caressing her daughters light curls Saber vowed she would try to take Cate somewhere safe the next morning, even if it killed her in the process.
Saber awoke the next morning to the sound of crying. Sighing heavily she sat up and took Cate in her arms. After nursing her, Saber felt around in her pouch for a crust of bread. She had saved it, and now ate it. If she was going to go into the streets of Tortuga, caring a child, she would need all the strength she could get. Standing up shakily she dusted herself off, and picked up a piece of blanket. At this point Saber had not yet adopted her classic look. She was wearing a torn black skirt, a white shirt, and a black corset on top of that. The last time she had worked at the tavern, a man had grabbed her by the back of her shirt and ripped it, so now it fell off of her shoulders. Throwing the blanket around herself she picked up Cate and made her way out into the street. Tortuga was a den of pirates, vagabonds, thieves, and murders. At night it was one of the most dangerous places in the whole Caribbean, during the day it was hardly any better. Although most of the people were sleeping off the effects of the night before, there were still men drinking and fighting in the early morning. Saber kept her head down and started to head towards the more decent part of town. If their really was one… That was where her mother had lived before she had married a pirate. The slightly more decent part of the town was up on a hill, and it held the more business like swindlers and their sometimes legitimate families. Saber didn’t know if she would be able to get help there or not, but it was worth a try. Unfortunately to get to that part of town one had to go right through the worst part of town. As Saber neared the seedier pubs she saw there were more and more men loitering about. She avoided making eye contact with any of them, even though some of them called to her and whistled. Clutching her child to herself she plowed her way forward ignoring the cat calls and comments. Suddenly she saw a group of about four men ahead of her. They were strolling down the middle of the street talking and laughing loudly. As the two parties met Saber tried to go around them, but they blocked her way.
“Well look here my friends” One of the men called loudly in a heavy French accent. “I haven’t seen this pretty little garce* before.” He said reaching out to chuck Saber under the chin. Saber dodged his touch and tired to push her way through. Again they blocked her way and they surrounded her. They began to pull her hair and try to lift her skirt. They laughed at her futile attempts to make them stop.
“Please… Please… just let me go.” Saber pleaded with them.
“Paul what do you think? She we let this hussy through our bit of town?” The one with the French accent asked a man with dark blond hair.
“I say we make her pay us something, and then we let her go.” Paul said coming up behind Saber, and grabbing her around her waist, tried to kiss her on the neck. Still grasping Cate, Saber shrieked and reaching back clawed at the man’s face. It must have done some good because he dropped her and yelling put his hand to his face. Saber fell to the ground and managed to stop herself with her hand before she crushed her child. She crouched there and listened as the man swore and cursed her. Then he kicked her hard in the back and she curled up to protect Cate. All four of the men began to beat and tease her. They ripped the blanket from her, exposing her bear shoulders and upper back. One of them grabbed her by her hair and yanked her upright. Saber screeched and let go of Cate, leaving her there on the ground. The man who grabbed her, she thought she overheard the Frenchman call him Simon, held her from behind around her bare shoulders and caressed her, passionately kissing her neck. Her torn shirt fell further down, revealing more skin then Saber preferred.
“Stop it please! God somebody help me!” She screamed and struggled as best she could. But this sort of thing happened all the time in Tortuga. No one cared when a girl was molested in the street. Saber felt her strength going, and just hoped that someone would find Cate in the street, and bring her up. Suddenly a clear dark voice sounded close by.
“Let that girl go.” They all turned to look and Saber gasped. A young man, probably not that much older then her, stood with a pistol trained on the Frenchman.
“Ah Aaron, yore just in time to enjoy…” The Frenchman began.
“Javert, you heard me… get your filthy carcass out of here before I shoot you through the head.”
“But Aaron, mate… I don’t understand. Wot’s made you go soft all of a sudden? We have just as much right to have as much fun as you do.”
“Yes… but if you notice I never hurt a girl or force her to do anything. Now beat it!” Aaron said taking a step closer and cocking his pistol.
Javert and the others had no choice but to go. Simon let go of Saber but purposely brushed his hand across her chest as he did so. Paul and the other man also made their little touches as they passed by. When the little group was about ten paces away Javert turned and sneered at Aaron.
“Just because you have a gun now doesn’t mean you’ll have it later boy. I’ll Pay you back for today, mark my words.” He spit on the ground, and then stalked off with his friends into the nearest tavern.
Saber pulled her shirt back onto her shoulders and bent down to pick up Cate. The child, miraculously enough, was sleeping. Lifting her up Saber let her tears fall. Turning she noticed that the man who had saved her was still standing there, looking at her. Saber lowered her eyes.
“Thank you Mr.…” She began with a whisper.
“Aaron… Aaron Fletcher.” He said smiling, all the while though he looked at her anxiously. Was she really alright? He knew what Javert and his friends did to women, and while he couldn’t exactly say he was a saint himself, he knew no one could accuse him of treating his women badly. Except when he broke their hearts and threw them away… but at least he didn’t physically hurt them… right? Saber nodded,
“Then thank you Mr. Fletcher for saving me. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to be going.” Saber turned, and taking a few steps forward, promptly fainted in the middle of the street. Aaron was right there and caught her as she fell.
“Bloody ell… this girl’s as light as a feather… I bet she hasn’t really eaten in days.” He muttered to himself as he picked her up and carried her off the road. “Oh god…” he breathed. “She’s got a kid.” He said struggling to hold both of them at once. Setting them both down in an ally way, he sat down next to them. Pillowing Saber’s head on his knees, he took up Cate and held her.
“Poor devils…” He thought to himself. Looking down at Saber, he smiled. She looked so restful… so peaceful... so beautiful… Shaking his head he pushed his thoughts from his mind. No he never would take advantage of an unconscious girl. Instead He sat there thinking of ways he could help her and waited till she woke up.
Saber awoke and stared around in confusion. He eyes focused on Aaron and with a jolt she remembered what had happened. Quickly she scrambled up and looked about for her baby. Aaron slowly stood up and handed the child to its frantic mother.
“Thank you again…Mr.”
“Please call me Aaron.”
“Well then thank you Aaron, once again, but I really have to be going.” Saber turned and started away again. Aaron quickly got in front of her and stopped her.
“Ah no… you are sick. You coughed constantly while you were lying there, and you look as if you haven’t had a scrap of bread in at least three days.”
“That’s not exactly true.” Saber murmured remembering the crust she had eaten that morning. “But please, I have to go. Let me pass.”
“Look I don’t think you realize the situation. I don’t now where you are going or what you have to do… but I think it can wait till tomorrow.” Aaron said taking a step back and swinging his hand over the town. The worst of Tortuga sat right in front of them, and night was beginning to fall. Saber gasped, she must have been out longer then she thought. “I know that you really have no reason to trust me, but at least let me escort you home. I have a feeling that Javert and his pals are probably waiting in the nearest tavern for you to walk by.” Aaron said grimly.
“No…” Saber said quietly. “I don’t want to go home. I was trying to get to some help in the… well more decent part of town. There’s nothing for me back there but death.” Saber said lowering her head. Aaron ran his hand through his messy white blond hair. He was not going to let this girl just go off by herself trying to find help. Especially not in the condition she was in.
“Alright… if I can’t take you home… then where would you like me to take you?”
“Can you take me up the hill?” Saber asked hopefully. Aaron winced. He had been afraid of this. He pushed his hair out of his face and sighed.
“No… actually… I can’t.” He sighed and saw how disappointed Saber looked. “Let me explain… My father is one of the Big shots who are behind this town… He banished me into the lower streets… and if I’m caught up there… I’ll probably be killed. Besides…” He snorted “I only have one pistol to protect myself… and it’s not even loaded.”
Saber stared in amazement.
“If those men hadn’t let go of me… what would you have done then?” She said sudden realization coming over her.
“Well I knew that Javert would choose life over you… not to say you’re not worth anything… I mean that’s wot he thinks… I don’t think that… I mean…” He sighed. “I have a small place down by the docks. It has two rooms. If you come with me I’ll put you up for the night, and maybe tomorrow I can get you up to the big houses, alright?”
Saber hesitated… she had already been hurt today… but then Aaron had saved her hadn’t he? And if he really wanted to take advantage of her, he could have done it while she was out, right? Looking at his dark blue eyes through his almost white hair, Saber felt for some reason she could trust him. She slowly smiled shyly and nodded.
“We have an accord Mr. Fletcher.”
“Aaron.”
“Right… Aaron.”
