Omaha Beach: To Hell and Back
The ride to Hell is long and lonely Each of us finds our own comfort to turn to The time has come, the price will be dear “30 seconds!” the coxswain yells 30 seconds till the end Mortars pound our defenseless ships Machine guns zip by our heads
Then the moment comes The ramp drops! One by one we fall We meet our end far from home “Move up the beach” is all I hear My friends fall all around me…the price is dear The enemy is determined to keep freedom at bay We will not have it…we will not yield
Buddies brought down with just one shot Ike had wished them the best of luck We crawl up the beach…oh that long lonely beach Men cut down like wheat in a field But why?
We have come to break the wall…Rommel’s Atlantic Wall We have come to free the world…we are soldiers of Democracy We lay down our lives in hopes in prayers…that the world will be free again And so it is that we go to Hell We go to Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold, and Juno We land in the mouth of Hell in the name of freedom Those of us who have survived fight on….but how? We draw our strength from the power of freedom, and the yearning to go home Home…some of us will not return God bless those who will not return Let them die not in vain…remember us this June 6 day
