(OOC - Somthing slightly funny, at least to me *grin* is the fact that Josie and I were talking about how we had been here for awhile and still didn't have our Bio up yet! So I decided to make write somthing real quick and call it good...
...and a page and a half later I am still going! *Jacks prayer hands* I pray you don't die laughing...*grin*)
Savvy was born Savannah Padraigin O'Mannon to Liam O'Mannon and his Wife Brenna on a little farm way up in the Emerald Hills of Ireland. Savvy, who refused to be called Savannah and told her Mother, almost as soon as she was old enough to talk, "me names NOT Savannah Mum! It's Savvy!" Brenna O'Mannon took one look at this little tiny lass with her baby hands on her hips, her green eyes flashing and her little dark curls bouncing this way and that and, trying not to burst out laughing, she bent down and soberly told the little girl, "Alright lass, Savvy is what I'll be callin' yeh from now on." And she did.
Savvy was the sixth child and the third Daughter in what was to end up being a very large family of Fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. Twelve children living it ended up being as one child, a baby boy was lost to illness shortly before Savvy was born and the other, a little girl drowned when Savvy was about two.
Liam O'Mannon was a tall dark man with very broad shouldered and green eyes, and there was no doubt that he was a farmer through and through. His Wife Brenna was smaller with pale blue eyes and quite fair haired and their children were a wonderful mix of the Dark Irish and the Light Irish. With Liam a farmer and Brenna a full time homaker you can bet that growing up the children always had lots to do and to help with. Liam taught them everything there was to know about farming and almost before they were old enough to walk they were taught to ride, milk, hoe, plow, plant, and many other things that went into running Liam's "Part" of the farm. Brennas "Part" was all about anything that was needed to keep a family fed, sheltered and comfortable. Brenna was a wonderful mother who knew how to do everything and her children, even the boys, were taught to cook, clean, sing, sew, play musical instruments, and many other things. there were many days that they spent together as they sang songs trying to come up with different harmonies and melodies whilst cooking, dipping candles and making soap.
Josie Labhoise O'Mannon joined the family six years after Savvy and from the time she was little she looked, walked and talked like a miniature of her older sister.
From the time she was a little girl Savvy was a prankster, always playing jokes and goofing around.. and as soon as she was old enough, Josie followed her sister around watching and learning and when she was old enough, she would delight in taking part with her sister in the pranking. There were many times when the sisters got into trouble for the pranks the pranks they were always playing, like there was the time when they pushed Old Farmer Mccartys "Little house" into the swift flowing stream, not realizing until they heard a string of prayers and curses flowing from inside it that the Farmer was still in it.
When Savvy was about 16 years old, her father was injured in an accident out in the fields. while the family thanked God for his not having lost his life, they worried about how they would be able to keep the family afloat with Liam sustaining permanent injuries from the accident, which made it very hard to be able to work and provide as he had in the past. Several of the children did odd jobs for neighbors as often as they could to help raise money for the family and Brenna took in washing and mending, but they were barely making ends meet and with nine children at home still, they would need a more permanent source of income. In the meantime, Michael Mcflurrin, one of the more prominent men in the nearby country side began to put pressure on the family to sell thier farm to him and to move into the village to live an easier more comfortable life. They also had accrued quite a large debt when Liam had been sick and there was that to consider as well. With Michael Mcflurrin's offer on the table before them, the O'Mannon family held a family council to decide what was to be done.
They discussed for a very long time this idea and that, weighing the pros and cons of each, but no decision was to be made, they would have to sell the farm. Savvy had been sitting at one end of the table listening quietly to the talk. After a bit she asked if she might be allowed to speak, and with the floor as hers she told them her idea. "Muther, I know that you and Da very much dislike the idea, but I really want to go to sea. We are up against a wall, what with the debt from Father's bein' ill and keeping the farm goin'. And with my older brothers and sister married with broods of their own to look after and support, and most of the rest of the bearns to young to do much, the responsibility comes to me and this is what I think I ought to do. I can sign on a respectable merchants ship Mum, I want to be a sailor. I know that you wanted me to be a farmers wife and have a brood of me' own. But first Mum, please let me do this for you all and for me. Please?
Three weeks later most of the family stood outside the home to bid Savvy farewell. She had all the she believed she would need in a little sack on her back and she was catching a ride with a friend who was taking the long trip to the docks to do some trading. It was very difficult for Savvy to bid farewell to her family and long after they had faded into the distance she remained facing back, silent tears streaming down her cheeks. But by the time they got to the docks, she was facing forward, the wind off the water was blowing her long brown hair, her greens eyes sparkled and she was ready for adventure.
