A tall, slim woman, her black hair cut just past her shoulders, and her pale skin glimmering, looked out across the seas. Her eyes - ice blue, and deadly cold - caught the faint outline of white sails, until faded over the horizon. No one bothered her, no one dared to. She was Rhianna Talten, the Black Rose.
Rhianna's mother, Clarrisse Talten - was kidnapped from her home village by the pirates of the Red Dawn, and was taken on as a maid, or slave-girl. She'd only been on the ship a few months when one of the lower ranking pirates thought he could take advantage of her. Rhianna was the result. As soon as she was born, Clarrisse was thrown off the ship, but the pirates kept Rhia, just to cause her mother more pain.
Surprisingly enough, Rhianna was not treated as a slave. She was brought up as a boy would've been, learning to sail and taking orers from the crew. She was sometimes teased about being female, but no one really took much notice of her. She was just another cabin boy. In this way, Rhia grew strong, not just physically, but also emotionally. She cared not about her mother, she just concerntrated on her duties, and was happy.
That was, until the ship was attacked, and Rhia and the crew taken captive. The captain of the Blue Star was not nearly so understanding, and neither were his crew. As Rhia grew older, she had to work harder and harder to keep the men from her, and soon she was constantly alert, always with one eye ever over her shoulder.
But the time came, one evening, when one of the pirates went to far. Rhianna didn't even think about what she did; she felt nothing as she drew her knife across this throat; as dark blood spurted out across her shirt. He was dead in seconds. The other pirates came running, but they made no move against Rhia. The body was thrown overboard, and no more was said of it.
From then on the crew stayed away from her, and Rhianna liked it that way. They hardly spoke to her, and when they did, it was with cold respect. Gone were their teases, and she was called nothing but Rhianna. Finally, just months after she killed hi, the captain of the Blue Star told her he wanted her to leave. He said she made the crew uneasy, and it would be better if she went. He did not mention the man she had killed. Rhia was only too happy to leave, she had no desire to stay with them.
All her life, Rhianna had survived by knowing just one thing; if she didn't look out for herself, no one else would. She was nick-named - though never to her face - the Black Rose, after the murder, and it suited her well. She could fight as well as any man, but she had a deadly ruthlessness, given only from her yers of hardship. Rhianna had killed in seconds, and she would do it again without a moment's hesiatation.
The woman sighed as the Blue Star disappeared. She had always been a pirate, and always would be. But now, at last, she was free. Rhianna, the Black Rose, was free.
